This kind of got on my nerves because several times the problem was Averill, once again, stupidly doing something to "please" Kade and having it backfire. And I just wanted to smack Kade and tell him to take charge of the situation already. The first time she did this, on their wedding night, I could understand him not wanting to hurt her feelings, but by the third time? So I couldn't really get too worked up about his case of blue-balls. And it didn't help that Averill seemed totally un-bothered by the fact that over a month into their marriage, they'd still only slept together once.

It just made the whole romance feel very meh. Also during this time, we have Kade basically not telling Averill anything that is going on, I guess because she's just a woman? I dunno. All he ever did was grunt or give one-word responses whenever she tried to talk to him. So between that and his total lack of communication on the bedroom situation, I just didn't see how these two could claim to love each other when they hardly spoke.

Moving on with the story, there are several more attempts on Kade's life during the rest of the book. A rock is pushed off the wall and almost crushes him, and he takes two arrows in the back while out in the woods, once again, trying to have sex with his wife.

This leads to a rather squicky part of the story when Averill has to use her dress to bind Kade's wounds and the rides through the rain wearing nothing but her chemise, which of course turns the affair into a wet T-shirt contest when she rides into the keep.

We only hear about this event after the fact when Kade is being told about it by Averill's BROTHER who rather disgustingly talks about how amazing Averill looked and how she must have "grown up" when he wasn't looking. It also leads to all of the guards in the castle ogling Averill from that point on and jumping to do her bidding, something they didn't do before.

It's all very skeevy and Kade doesn't seem to mind at all that every male in the castle is suddenly jerking off to fantasies about his wife.

Like I said, it was squicky. And it never gets resolved in any way. I think we're supposed to think it's a good thing that all the men now see Averill as a sex object. Like she's finally shed the stigma of being "ugly" that has been following her around since she was a child.

Finally one of the 3 missing men turns up badly wounded and says the other two are dead. That someone attacked them while they were sleeping and took Kade's chest of money. Then Brody corners Averill in her bedroom, having figured out that she was poisoning his whiskey. He punches her in the face and throws her on the bed, intending to rape and then kill her, despite the fact that she's his brother's wife. A servant, the mother of the maid who had a breakdown after Brody raped her, comes to Averill's rescue.

Averill them grabs the idiot ball again and dithers about how she doesn't want to tell Kade what Brody did because Kade will probably kill him and she doesn't want Kade to carry that guilt for the rest of his life. The servant is pretty seriously pissed at Averill for even considering covering this up and I don't blame her.

It was pretty insensitive of Averill to tell the woman whose own daughter had been raped by this guy and never faced any consequences for it, that she was going to once again let him get off scot free because it might make Kade feel bad to have to mete out some punishment for once.

Only when the servant threatens to tell Kade herself does Averill relent. And even then she only tells him that Brody punched her, not that he'd planned to rape and kill her. We never get a single other scene with this servant either, which I feel leaves things kind of unfinished.

Averill also deliberately doesn't tell Kade that Brody is unconscious in their own bed, so that when Kade goes looking for his brother, he can't find him and assumes he is hiding out in the village. She goes through a very elaborate set of actions and half-truths and lies-by-omission to explain why she and Kade have to sleep in a different room that night and Kade buys it all because they have up to this point communicated with each other so little that he can't tell when she's lying.

He does, however, intend to beat the crap out of his brother as soon as he finds him because while it's okay to beat and rape servant girls, laying a finger on his wife is NOT acceptable!! The next morning Kade slips out to find Brody and, along with Will, figures out that Brody is in Kade's room.

It's then sort of hinted at that the fact that Brody is unconscious in the bed and the women "left him where he fell" indicates that Brody was on top of Averill in the bed when the servant knocked him out. But Kade never really pursues that topic, which I didn't understand. Instead he finds Brody dead, stabbed to death.

She still doesn't disclose the rape and murder part, figuring that it doesn't matter now that Brody is dead and can't hurt anyone. It's quickly determined that the blow that felled Brody was probably meant for Kade since Brody was sleeping in Kade's bed and the covers had been pulled up so that just the top of his head showed.

Kade has said all along that he has no idea who could possibly want him dead but we're almost to the end of the book so it's time for the villain to show himself. It turns out to be one of the 3 trusted men he sent to get the chest, Dominal or something like that.

He's one of Kade's distant cousins and while Kade was unconscious for so long in the beginning of the book, the three trusted men had discussed the fact that he probably wouldn't wake up and that they would have to fulfill Kade's quest of rousting out his alcoholic relatives and restoring his home to glory for him. Dominal was apparently the next in line for the title of Laird if Kade died and all his male relatives willingly stepped down so he quickly warmed to the idea.

Then Kade woke up and Dominal was pissed to see his dreams die. So when he was sent to pick up this chest and realized that it contained a king's ransom in gold, he decided to just go ahead and keep it.

He killed the other two men although we later find out one of them survived and had been following Kade around all this time trying to kill him.

Dominal's confession is witnessed by like four people and he's basically cornered but then Averill, once again clutching the idiot ball, just strolls into the room and provides Dominal with a hostage. He puts a knife to her throat and drags her into the secret passage that all LS castles have. Inside he orders Averill to pick up the chest of gold but it's too heavy for her to lift and he has to push her into another room outside of the passage in a hurry before Kade catches up.

Inside that room, despite the fact that he's literally got his arm wrapped around Averill and a knife at her throat, she some how manages to not only feel around but also pick up a freaking metal shield and raise it up to bash him in the head with it without him seeing it coming.

He then falls on his own knife, neatly killing himself so neither our hero nor heroine have to deal the death blow.

How convenient. Averill has a cut on her neck that requires stitches but is otherwise fine. Kade mopes around the keep for a week without telling Averill why because these two have no communication skills. She assumes he's upset that his cousin betrayed him. When they finally chat, Kade says he's sorry that his chest of gold is gone because it'll make for a hard winter for his people. Averill's like "oh, I totally forgot to mention that there's a super-heavy chest in the secret passage.

Oops, silly me! She then asks why Kade married her if he was already rich since her only appeal was her dowry. Kade confesses his love for her and she immediately says it back and they live HEA. The lack of communication between the MCs was kind of annoying and kept their relationship from feeling more than superficial.

I wasn't a huge fan of the goofy things that kept happening to prevent them having sex but judging from the reviews they were a lot of people's favorite part so YMMV. It wasn't bad but just kind of meh. Kade healed from all his near-death experiences very, very quickly and Averill never really seemed all that worried about him, honestly so yeah, kind of weak on the romance.

I didn't hate it but I'll never read it again. Kade and Averill grow closer as she nurses him back to health, and after their marriage travel to Scotland to take up residence at the Stewert keep. Unfortunately, someone has other plans for Kade and has no qualms killing the young warrior… A quick and entertaining read with a charming romance and a solid suspense plot. While Averill is not much of a hellion, she is a sweet and charming heroine with a strong backbone, and Kade is a courageous soldier and an honorable man. Their romance is characterized by an intense chemistry despite the numerous interruptions to their amorous intentions and an endearing emotional connection.

The assassination plot is similar to the previous book but more logical even though the revelation of the villain is quite sudden. The secondary characters are well developed and it is possible that Sands had plans for additional books, but alas ,they never materialized - perhaps sometime in the future. Jul 22, Hamasat rated it liked it Shelves: historical. This one wasn't as amzing as the previous two. The story is great and so is the character but I wanted to know what Kade will do meeting his sister or what Merry baby sex is. Sorry but not having my answers made me hate the book at the end even though I enjoyed it. May 30, Susan Carlisle rated it it was amazing.

Super good book and great cover guy! Jul 13, Rose May rated it it was ok Shelves: d. Her father, desperate to get her married, has tried every trick in the book, parading her in front of many snotty English lords - however her red hair, birthmark, and stutter make her unmarriageable.

Kade was a friend of her brother, Will, and they spent three years in a prison camp together with a few other men before making a bold escape that leaves them injured but free.

The boat they're traveling on to get back to England, however, crashes into the rocks leaving Kade very badly hurt when they arrive at the Mortagne Manor. Averill, with her expansive knowledge of care-taking, has been helping Kade get well for weeks. Kade, never one to pass up a good, kind woman offers to marry Averill himself. This was part of my problem with the book. Kade got better much too quickly for my liking, and thus spent little time getting to know Averill. He practically avoids her before their marriage, and it's hard to see how he could even want to marry her with the little he knows of her.

So I assumed I would see something developing after they married. So I was left floundering in this passionless relationship that seemed built on thin air. Surprised and disappointed. To me that exemplified their lack of intimacy. One thing I will say I liked was that Averill acted like a virgin on her wedding night. A break in the cliche - well and humorously done, Sands!

I had a hard time identifying with Kade or Averill. Their internal struggles were hard to connect to and I never formed an emotional bond with their of them. I could, sometimes, identify with Kade but even then his struggles took on a rather listless and boring quality. Instead of worrying about the state of of the Stewart estate and his brothers with him, I was simply reading about his worries. It was like I was skimming the emotions instead of partaking in them. Sands was never able to get me into the story.

Laddie, a little boy, is adorable, but he was one of the only secondary characters I really connected with or found well-developed. Will was easy to connect with, but his character was lacking a depth necessary to make him a good character.

That was cute and light-hearted fun. Was it good? Was it funny? It was good, better than average… but not great. Aug 26, Ann Lorz rated it really liked it Shelves: family , humor , series , historical , highlander.

I can't believe I missed it or should say forgot about it. Because it's been so long it took me a few minutes to remember the series. I'm happy to say that it did come back to me. Thank goodness, it really helped with the story. I always enjoy reading historical's by Lynsay Sands, she has the type of characters that I enjoy. Her books always contain enough humor and romance to make the story enjoyable.

Her writing is very easy to get into. If you haven't read her before you don't know what you are missing. Like I said, this is the third book in the Devil of the Highlands. Each of the three books are connected so they should be read in order. Of course there is only three so that shouldn't be a issue. Both are perfect for each other. Averill might come off as meek but you'll soon learn she's not. Kade soon figures that out. Of course like so many of Sands stories their road to happiness isn't a easy one.

But you'll be happy to be along for the ride. When Kade becomes Laird so easily you'd think all will be going smooth in their future. Of course that's a little hard when someone is trying to kill Kade. Poor Kade! I'm so glad that I caught up on this series. Of course I'm behind a few more of hers so Mar 11, Heather rated it liked it Shelves: historical-romance.

Main characters are Kade Steward, Lady Averill. Book starts out with Kade awakening from a head injury to a womans voice, that voice belongs to Averill who is telling him tales.

Averill has "orange" hair, a stawberry birthmark, and a temper. Unable to find a English husband to wed her due to her being labeled "devils spawn" due to the aformentioned traits. However, Kade likes all of that including Averill herself. They marry and like the other books in this ser 3. They marry and like the other books in this series things start to happen. Near misses with arrows, falling rocks, missing men, drunken steward men, and more arrows all happen in this story.

Someone is apparently trying to kill Kade Plenty of funny parts some drama and only two tuppin' parts but not for lack of trying. It was a quick read, I devoured it in a day but couldn't give it anymore stars due to the repeaditiveness of the plot from this series.

If you read all 3 books you'll understand what I mean. You can read as a stand-alone and enjoy it as well. And there's finally resolution to clan Stewart. But there's a lot of heart-breaking scenes in this book, some due to whiskey and jealousy, and some due to plain cruelty and superstition.

I was horrified at Averill's rejection because of RED hair and a strawberry birthmark! And I was put out at her over not telling Kade the whole truth of what his brother Brodie did or tried to do to her. The m 3. The mystery in this book is a little better than the other two books. It's harder to figure out who's behind it all until closer to the reveal. Averill and Kade are amazing together. I like them both individually and as a couple.

And I loved seeing the Devil and his bride again. Wish we could have seen Merry and her hubby, too, because this is the last in the trilogy. But all's well that ends well.

Oct 27, Elaine rated it really liked it Shelves: historical-romance , 4-stars. Another lovely story by Lindsay Sands. I wanted something fun and light and this book delievered. I liked this installment much better than book two. The character were enjoyable and plot solid.

I love how characters from previous books get to make appearances. Lots of heat, but also cleverness, mystery, and humor. The book has been awarded with Booker Prize, Edgar Awards and many others.
